Our Doctors

Dr. Joseph C. Wolfer specializes in veterinary ophthalmology. He became Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists in 1994 and became a member of the American Society of Retina Specialists in 2004.

Dr. Wolfer has been in practice since 1992 and opened the Animal Eye Clinic in 2000. Most recently the clinic opened a brand new facility in 2010. Dr Wolfer is one of only a few veterinary ophthalmologists in North America who provide surgical care for patients with retinal detachment, and this has been the main focus of his research since 1998.

An active member of the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association, Dr. Wolfer has authored numerous journal articles and textbook chapters. He is an adjunct professor of ophthalmology at the Ontario Veterinary College and enjoys participating in undergraduate student education.

As a board certified ophthalmologist Dr Wolfer is experienced in diagnosing, treating and surgically correcting all ocular concerns. He has performed numerous difficult surgeries on many different animals including wildlife. Articles in The Toronto Star, The Sun, and Canadian Vet are a few of the newspapers that his work has been commended in.

James Michael Histed, BSc, DVM, Dip ACVO

Ophthalmologist

Dr. James Histed graduated from the Atlantic Veterinary College in 2006, and following an internship at the Ontario Veterinary College, was elated to be offered a residency with Animal Eye Care Associates and North Carolina State University in the USA. The private practice portion of the residency prepared Dr. Histed for all that can be thrown at him in the small animal ophthalmology world, while the portion of the residency through NCSU gave him the experience needed to be competent in the realm of large animal ophthalmology (not to mention in teaching ophthalmology).

Dr. Histed has now returned to his home in Canada, and is thrilled to be starting his career in Toronto with Dr. Joe Wolfer. With boards now out of the way, Dr. Histed plans to spend his free time continuing to learn the art of rangefinder photograph, getting back into snowboarding and playing hockey (a much easier task to do back home in Canada), and of course exploring near and far with his beautiful wife.
